LAKE MACQUARIE: While police are looking for suspects, the internet is looking for answers—and the theories are getting weird.
The disappearance of 23 massive sandstone blocks from Speers Point has sparked a wave of social media speculation, ranging from the hilarious to the supernatural. With each block weighing over a tonne, the fact that they vanished from a busy road without a trace has left the community baffled.
Local community groups have been flooded with quips and conspiracies as residents try to imagine how a “heavyweight heist” of this scale was pulled off in broad daylight.
“I think it’d be a Great Wall in somebody’s backyard,” one resident joked, suggesting the stone may have found a new home in a local landscaping project.
Theories about “Lake Macquarie Stonehenge” or the construction of the region’s first pyramid have gained traction among those who find the logistics impossible to explain.
“I saw this guy (Andre the Giant) playing Jenga around the corner,” one user quipped.
One of the most popular jokes suggests the blocks were removed by frustrated parents: “Hell hath no fury like a soccer mum scorned,” referring to the blocks’ role in stopping parking near the local fields.

Twenty-three of the 1.1-tonne blocks seemingly disappeared in Speers Point without anyone seeing or hearing a thing.
Despite the humor, the situation remains a serious matter for Lake Macquarie City Council. Replacing the 25 tonnes of stone will cost taxpayers $10,000.
Authorities are struggling to understand how a crane and at least one large truck (or several smaller ones) could operate on The Esplanade without drawing attention. “Chances are they would have had to make multiple trips there and back to steal them,” said Council Manager Dayne Harris.
As the mystery remains unsolved, residents are keeping a sharp eye on their neighbors’ new garden walls.
