Travel Warning: Measles Cases Confirmed Across Sydney, Brisbane, and Gold Coast

A public health emergency has been declared in multiple Australian states, with confirmed measles cases spanning major metropolitan areas and regional centres, prompting health officials to issue an urgent warning about vaccination status.

In NSW, the infected person used major transport links, including Sydney Airport and trains, between Saturday and Monday, while also visiting the CBD and inner west locations. Authorities have published a full list of potential exposure sites on the NSW Health website but confirm there is no ongoing risk at those locations.

In Queensland, three separate confirmed cases have been linked to a concert held by American singer Jelly Roll at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on October 24. Health officials say the trio was infectious while spending time across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and the Wide Bay areas, demonstrating the virus\’s wide geographical reach.

Dr. Jeremy McAnulty, Health Protection NSW executive director, noted that symptoms for measles—which is highly infectious and airborne—can take up to 18 days to appear after exposure.

\”Symptoms to watch out for include fever, sore eyes, runny nose and a cough, usually followed three or four days later by a red, blotchy rash that spreads from the head and face to the rest of the body,\” he stated.

People who visited the exposure sites must remain vigilant for symptoms until Friday, November 28.

Dr. McAnulty emphasized that the recent cases should serve as a strong reminder for the community to ensure they are protected.

\”Anyone born after 1965 needs to ensure they have had two doses of measles vaccine,\” he stressed. This protection is vital not just locally but particularly before overseas travel, given that \”measles outbreaks are occurring in several regions of the world at the moment.\”
