CFMEU Inquiry Opens: Focus on Systemic Violence and Productivity as Administrator

The Queensland Commission of Inquiry into the CFMEU and Misconduct in the Construction Industry has commenced today, opening the floor for the first block of witnesses in a bid to resolve allegations of deep-seated and harmful practices within the union.

The inquiry was launched following findings in a report by Geoffrey Watson SC—supported by media investigations—which detailed allegations of systemic violence, intimidation, misogyny, and bullying on Queensland construction sites.

The crucial nature of the inquiry is underlined by the lineup of first-week witnesses, which includes the man tasked by the federal government with cleaning up the union:

Mark Irving SC, who was appointed as the Administrator after the union\’s construction branches were placed into administration last year, is expected to provide key insights into the state of the union\’s operations.

Geoffrey Watson SC, whose initial report prompted the official inquiry, will also testify, providing context on why critical witnesses originally refused to speak out due to fear of retribution.

Premier David Crisafulli asserted that the inquiry is essential to improving site conditions. \”We are drawing a line in the sand to make sure workers are safe on worksites and productivity can return to construction,\” he said.

The hearings, led by Commissioner Stuart Wood AM KC and held in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, possess powerful coercive abilities to ensure that individuals—who previously feared speaking—can now safely provide evidence.

Also scheduled to appear are construction worker Timothy Ellis and Workplace Health and Safety executive director Sarina Wise, highlighting the inquiry\’s focus on on-the-ground conditions and regulatory oversight. The public can follow the proceedings via a live stream on the Commission\’s website.
