Ukrainian Source Claims ‘Upbeat’ Trump Peace Talks Hide Major Omissions

KYIV:  A significant rift has opened between the optimistic assurances being offered by the US administration and the ground truth coming out of the ongoing, sensitive peace negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

President Trump’s team, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has projected a uniformly upbeat view, citing \”tremendous progress\” and \”very positive\” talks in Geneva over the weekend. An US military envoy meeting Russian officials in Abu Dhabi even declared that a peace deal had been \”agreed to,\” with only \”some minor details to be sorted out.\”

However, a senior Ukrainian source with direct knowledge of the high-stakes discussions told CNN that this public spin does not reflect the difficult reality in Kyiv.

The source acknowledged that \”consensus\” had been reached on most of the 28 items in the original US peace proposals leaked last week. But they quickly clarified that far from being \”minor,\” at least three crucial disagreements remain that pose serious threats to the viability of any negotiated settlement.

These disputes center on issues considered existential for Ukrainian sovereignty.

The initial US proposal called for Ukraine to cede the Donbas region to be converted into a Russian-administered demilitarized zone. The source confirmed \”certain progress\” had been made on the language, but warned that no substantive agreement on the handover of this annexed but unconquered territory has been formalized.

Ukraine remains resistant to the controversial proposal to limit its military to 600,000 troops. While a higher figure has been raised in discussions, Kyiv requires further concessions before it would agree to such constraints on its ability to defend itself.

The demand for Ukraine to permanently renounce its ambition to join NATO is still \”unacceptable.\” The Ukrainian source argued that this concession would set a \”bad precedent\” and effectively hand Russia a lasting veto over the Western military alliance—the very goal for which Moscow launched its brutal campaign.

The three outstanding issues are the most prominent demands the Kremlin has made for ending the war. For Kyiv, formally stepping away from any of these points would be a huge political undertaking, carrying immense risks for the Ukrainian leaders who sign off on a deal.
