A national day of mourning has been announced in Switzerland for 9 January

As the smoke clears in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana, the focus of the Valais prosecutor’s office has turned to the owners of Le Constellation. A criminal investigation is officially underway against a French couple, identified as Jacques and Jessica Moretti, on charges of manslaughter by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence.

Preliminary findings suggest a catastrophic chain of events began around 1:30 AM during New Year celebrations. Investigators believe “fountain sparklers” attached to champagne bottles were carried too close to the ceiling.

Video from inside the bar appears to show the moment the ceiling covering caught fire

“One or two minutes later, it was the apocalypse,” said Christophe Brodard, a parent of one of the victims.

Lead prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud is specifically examining the acoustic foam used for soundproofing on the ceiling. The investigation aims to determine if this material was compliant with Swiss fire safety regulations or if it acted as a fuel that turned the basement venue into a “death trap” for the hundreds of revelers inside.

While the death toll stands at 40, the number of casualties could still rise. Of the 119 people injured, many remain in critical condition with burns covering over 70% of their bodies.

The identification process has been painstakingly slow due to the severity of the burns, requiring DNA samples from families across Europe. As the community of Crans-Montana held a memorial Mass and a silent march on Sunday, the search for answers—and accountability—continues.
