Pilot Eddie Seve Killed in Mid-Air Collision Near Sydney Airfield

SYDNE: The aviation world is in mourning following the tragic death of highly respected display pilot Eddie Seve, from Sydney’s Hills District, after a mid-air collision near Napperfield Airfield in Wedderburn, southwest of Sydney.

Emergency services were called just before 11:50 am to reports that two Van’s Aircraft RV-7 planes had collided. One of the aircraft crashed into nearby bushland, where the body of the fatally injured pilot, Mr. Seve, was later located.

Mr. Seve was a dedicated member of the Freedom Formation Display Team, which confirmed one of its aircraft was involved in the incident.

The Temora Flyers posted a heartfelt tribute on social media, highlighting the immense loss felt across the industry. “Today’s loss is deeply felt across the aviation community and by all who have witnessed their commitment firsthand,” the group wrote. “The pilot who passed was a highly respected member of the formation team and a strong supporter of youth in aviation. Their contribution to inspiring young people and promoting safe, professional flying will not be forgotten.”

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) confirmed that the two aircraft were part of a four-plane formation that was returning to land at Wedderburn Airport when the collision occurred.

The pilot of the second plane involved in the collision, Ollie Geraghty, managed to land safely at the airfield and was reported to be uninjured.

Police and the ATSB have launched a joint investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision. The tragedy is the second crash at the airport in a year, raising further questions about safety at the facility.
