Server Failure Blamed for Optus Outage Affecting 95,000 Queensland Homes

BRISBANE: A network server failure at a major Optus facility in Rochedale, located in Brisbane’s southern suburbs, has been identified as the culprit behind a widespread NBN outage that has cut internet and home phone services for an estimated 95,000 customers across Queensland.

The fault at the Rochedale server facility triggered the service disruption, affecting tens of thousands of connections spanning from the capital city through to regional areas like North Queensland. While the telco’s mobile services remain fully operational, the core NBN connectivity, essential for modern internet and home phone services (for customers without 4G/5G backup modems), is non-functional.

In a statement, Optus extended apologies to its affected customer base: “We sincerely apologise for the disruption and thank customers for their patience while our teams work as quickly as possible to restore services.”

Despite the assurance of a swift technical response, the company has been unable to confirm a definite timeline for when NBN services will be fully restored.

Crucially, Optus has also been unable to verify whether customers impacted by the NBN outage—especially those relying on an NBN connection for home phone services—are currently able to reach the crucial triple zero emergency services.

Optus is urging customers to be prepared to take action once the network is confirmed fixed: affected users will need to manually cycle their modems, turning them off and then on again, to successfully reconnect to the NBN service. The majority of the affected connections are believed to be residential landline users.
