ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA — As the England cricket team traveled from Brisbane to Adelaide to prepare for the crucial Third Ashes Test, their departure was overshadowed by a bizarre off-field incident involving an aggressive security guard and an Australian camera crew.
The guard, assigned to the England traveling party, was filmed aggressively confronting and repeatedly shouting at Channel 7 camera operator Nick Carrigan at Brisbane Airport on Saturday. The guard, in a misguided attempt to block the cameras, was even seen pushing some of the England players out of the way.
Carrigan, an experienced operator, confirmed he was maintaining a professional distance but was left shocked by the security guard’s unprovoked hostility, calling the confrontation “totally uncalled for.”
The Seven Network subsequently released a statement confirming the physical confrontation in a public space, saying the incident is being taken “seriously and is now being managed through the appropriate channels.”
The overzealous protection was particularly notable given the context: the England team has just suffered two heavy defeats, leaving them under immense pressure heading into the Day/Night Test in Adelaide. The players themselves have not been shy of the cameras and were unbothered by the filming.
In a stark contrast, the triumphant Australian players were captured arriving in Adelaide all smiles, posing for selfies with fans without a security guard in sight, embodying the relaxed confidence of a team leading the series 2-0.
Despite the disruption at the airport, England Captain Ben Stokes remained focused on the task ahead. After arriving in Adelaide, he confirmed the team was fully prepared: “We’re refreshed and ready to go,” Stokes said.
The Third Test at Adelaide Oval begins on Wednesday.
