SYDNEY : In the wake of the country’s deadliest mass casualty event in nearly three decades, the Australian government has moved to significantly strengthen national security and anti-hate laws.
The Investigation and Charges Police have officially designated the Bondi Beach shooting as a terrorist incident. Alleged gunman Naveed Akram, 24, has been charged with 59 offences, including 15 counts of murder and one count of committing a terrorist act. His father and alleged accomplice, Sajid Akram, 50, was shot dead by police at the scene on Sunday.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that the attack appeared to be “motivated by Islamic State (IS) group ideology,” targeting a Jewish community event marking the start of Hanukkah.
New Legislative Powers As the victims were laid to rest on Thursday, the federal government announced a major crackdown on hate-fueled behavior. The new measures include:
Visa Cancellations: Enhanced powers to refuse or cancel visas on the grounds of antisemitism or other forms of targeted hate.
New legal frameworks to expedite the prosecution of individuals inciting violence or religious vilification.
Casualty Status Medical authorities confirmed that of the 16 people injured in the attack, two remain in critical condition. The tragedy is the deadliest incident in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre.
Jewish community leaders have welcomed the legislative changes but maintain that more must be done to address the “rising tide of antisemitism” that they believe created the environment for such an inevitable tragedy.
