Pope Leo XIV Urges Ukraine and Russia to End War in Christmas Address

Vatican: Vatican City witnessed a historic moment this Christmas as Pope Leo XIV delivered his first Urbi et Orbi address to thousands of worshippers gathered in St. Peter’s Square. The pontiff used his debut holiday message to issue a powerful plea for peace, specifically calling on the leadership of Ukraine and Russia to find the courage required to initiate direct negotiations. He expressed a deep desire for the clamor of weapons to cease and urged both nations to engage in sincere and respectful dialogue with the active support of the international community.

The Pope’s remarks come at a critical time as US-led diplomatic efforts continue to seek a resolution to the ongoing conflict. While international mediators have been working to find common ground, direct face-to-face discussions between the warring parties remain elusive. Beyond Eastern Europe, the Pope also turned his attention to Southeast Asia, specifically mentioning the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. He called for a restoration of their ancient friendship and urged both nations to move toward reconciliation following recent border disturbances.

In a poignant segment of his address, Pope Leo XIV drew parallels between the birth of Jesus and the plight of the modern displaced. He spoke specifically about the catastrophic conditions in Gaza, where millions are facing a harsh winter without adequate shelter. The pontiff lamented that many are currently living in fragile tents exposed to freezing rain and wind. He described the flesh of defenseless populations as fragile and wounded by years of bombardment and displacement.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire as aid agencies continue to call for increased access to essential supplies. While Israeli authorities have stated that thousands of tents and protective materials have been moved into the territory since the October ceasefire, international observers warn that the scale of the need far exceeds the current rate of delivery. Pope Leo XIV concluded his message by reminding the world that the message of Christmas is one of solidarity with the weak and the oppressed.
