CANBERRA — Almost one million Australians are currently sitting on a “lost” goldmine, with Services Australia revealing that $270 million in Medicare rebates remains unclaimed.
The issue stems from a simple administrative hurdle: outdated bank details. According to Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen, the average person is owed roughly $275, which could be in their bank account within 72 hours of an update.
Young Australians aged 18 to 24 represent the largest group of “missing” claimants. Roughly 250,000 young adults in this bracket are owed money.
“Many young people are unaware they need to provide their own bank details once they start working or seeking independent care, even if they remain on a parent’s Medicare card,” Jongen warned.

Reclaiming your money is a straightforward digital process that takes less than five minutes:
Access your myGov account via the app or website.
Go to the Medicare section.
Follow the prompts to check and save your current bank account details.
Once updated, any backlogged rebates will be automatically processed and paid into your account within three working days.
