Sailing Strategy: Behind the Scenes of Comanche’s Tactical Triumph

While the headlines belong to the winners, the story of the 2025 Sydney to Hobart was a battle of mechanical attrition. Master Lock Comanche’s win wasn’t just about speed; it was about surviving a race of “wounded animals.”

The defending champion, LawConnect, suffered a series of debilitating equipment failures that ultimately cost them the title:

A broken outhaul and mainsheet on Saturday night hindered their power.

The yacht’s wind instruments failed completely, forcing the crew to sail “blind” through the night.

Skipper Christian Beck admitted to being incapacitated by sea sickness during the most critical upwind legs.

The upwind conditions turned the race into a survival test for the 128 starters.

Category Statistic
Total Starters 128
Total Retirements 33 (26%)
Comanche’s Winning Time 2d 05h 03m 36s
Current Race Record 1d 09h 15m 24s (Comanche, 2017)

Hong-Kong owned SHK Scallywag 100, led by David Witt, proved to be the “dark horse” of the race. Briefly taking the lead on Sunday morning, the crew showcased incredible resilience despite having to perform a penalty turn early in the race. Meanwhile, the American 88-footer Lucky pushed the supermaxis to their limit, staying within a mile of the leaders for the majority of the Tasmanian coast.

As the leaders dock at Constitution Dock, more than 80 yachts remain at sea. A predicted wind change is expected to ease conditions, offering a “downwind ride” home for the smaller boats still battling the elements in the pursuit of the Tattersall Cup (Overall Handicap Winner).
