The Hour-Long Police Pursuit Behind the Mt Druitt Knife Incident

SYDNEY : New South Wales Police have revealed the sequence of events that led to a high-risk arrest inside the Westfield Mt Druitt shopping centre this afternoon, involving a 21-year-old man allegedly armed with multiple weapons.

The operation began at approximately 1:00 PM when local police received urgent reports of a man leaving a unit block in Willmot, in Sydney’s west, while carrying visible weapons. Officers immediately commenced a search of the surrounding suburbs.

Roughly thirty minutes later, patrolling officers spotted a vehicle believed to be linked to the suspect. Police attempted a traffic stop; however, the driver allegedly refused to pull over, leading to a brief search. The vehicle was later discovered abandoned in the carpark of the Westfield Mt Druitt shopping centre.

The situation escalated when the suspect entered the shopping complex. Armed with at least one knife, the man allegedly ran through the interior, eventually reaching the food court area.

Police, who were already on high alert following the vehicle discovery, moved in rapidly. The 21-year-old was tackled to the ground and disarmed in front of stunned onlookers.

The suspect has been taken to a local police station where charges are expected to be laid. Investigators are currently reviewing CCTV footage from both the Willmot unit block and the shopping centre to determine the full extent of the man’s actions during the hour-long
