68 NSW Beaches Closed Amid “Dangerous” Surf Conditions

Police search for a missing man at Coogee Beach.

SYDNEY: OFFICIAL PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY — Surf Life Saving NSW and local councils are issuing an urgent plea to the public to avoid all coastal activities as a “spate of drownings” overshadows the New Year’s holiday period.

With three confirmed deaths and two active search missions for missing persons, SLSNSW Chief Executive Steve Pearce has warned that the current conditions are catching revellers off guard.

“We are pleading for people — do not enter the water today if that beach is closed,” Pearce stated, noting that lifesavers have already performed over 85 rescues and 40,000 preventative actions since Christmas.

A total of 68 beaches are currently marked as unsafe for swimming, rock fishing, or boating. Notable closures include:

Coogee, Maroubra, Clovelly, Little Bay, and Malabar.

Multiple locations including Avoca (following a serious resuscitation incident).

Areas around Shoal Bay.

A woman is believed dead after she was swept out to sea at Maroubra Beach, Sydney.

Search for a male in his 20s. Operations were suspended at 11:00 am today due to “extreme conditions” and will resume tomorrow.

Search for a 14-year-old boy remains active following a fatal boating accident on December 31.

The Randwick Council and SLSNSW advise all residents and visitors to:

Assume all major surf beaches are closed until further notice.

High tides and rogue waves have already proven fatal at Maroubra.

A significant portion of recent rescues has involved groups of children.

If you see someone in trouble in the water, do not attempt a rescue yourself if conditions are dangerous; call 000 immediately.
