Why 60 Sporting Elites are Demanding a Federal Bondi Inquiry

Olympians Dawn Fraser, Nova Peris and Jewish sprinter Steve Solomon left flowers at Bondi.

The push for a Federal Royal Commission into the Bondi Beach massacre has reached a critical mass. Joining the 120 business leaders and senior Catholic bishops who petitioned the government last week, a new coalition of over 60 sporting stars has now added their names to the growing list of dissenters against the Prime Minister’s current strategy.

The list of athletes spans across every major Australian code, including:

Swimming: Ian Thorpe, Grant Hackett, and Dawn Fraser.

AFL: Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood) and Isaac Heeney (Sydney Swans).

Tennis: Lleyton Hewitt and John Alexander.

Cricket: Former captain Michael Clarke.

The letter explicitly states that with the Brisbane 2032 Olympics on the horizon, the world is watching how Australia protects its citizens and public spaces. They argue that a “short, sharp” review into intelligence agencies—the currently planned Richardson Review—is insufficient to uncover the deeper societal roots of the radicalization that led to the December tragedy.

While the NSW Government is moving forward with a state-based Royal Commission, the signatories insist that the problem of antisemitism extends far beyond state borders.

Prime Minister Albanese has maintained that a federal commission would take too long, but the sports stars—trained in the pursuit of long-term excellence—argue that “restoring social harmony” requires a meaningful, practical plan that only a powerful national inquiry can provide.
