Harcourt Residents Return to Ruins After 30,000-Hectare Blaze

Tyrone Rice lost his home while fighting a bushfire.

CENTRAL HIGHLANDS:  Victorian authorities have revealed the staggering extent of the damage following a fast-moving bushfire that tore through the state’s Central Highlands yesterday.

New data confirms the inferno scorched 30,000 hectares of land and destroyed at least 50 structures, including primary residences and essential farming infrastructure.

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan visited the Harcourt region this morning to meet with residents and first responders. “This is a fabulous small community that has been hit really hard,” the Premier said, pledging ongoing state support for the recovery process.

The speed of the fire caught many locals by surprise. While a drop in temperatures overnight provided a reprieve for those who stayed behind, the morning light revealed a landscape of “charred brick” and “blackened paddocks.”

The disaster hit the local leadership personally. Murrindindi Mayor Damien Gallagher was on the back of a fire truck as part of a strike team when the fire threatened his own neighborhood.

“The intensity of the heat is incredible,” Mayor Gallagher reported. “With my crew, the guys on the back did an incredible job in some tough situations where they couldn’t breathe.”

Retirees Ray and Loretta Rice lost their forever home.

Support services are now being established for the dozens of families left homeless. The focus has shifted from suppression to recovery, with the following priorities:

Teams are moving through Harcourt and Alexandra to finalize the count of lost homes.

Financial and psychological aid is being fast-tracked for victims, including retirees and frontline volunteers who lost their livelihoods.

Crews are working to restore power and safe road access to the fire-affected zones.

Authorities are reminding Victorians to remain vigilant as the fire season continues, even as the community rallies to help those who have lost everything.
