Teen on Bail Charged After Pursuit Crash Claims Life of Medical Student

SYDNEY:  NSW Police have confirmed that a 21-year-old woman has died following a high-speed pursuit in Sydney’s south-west, sparking renewed debate over youth crime and bail laws.

On the night of December 10, police attempted to stop a stolen utility vehicle. The driver, a 17-year-old male, allegedly accelerated to speeds of 140km/h in a desperate attempt to evade authorities.

The pursuit ended in catastrophe at 11:00 PM when the stolen ute allegedly disregarded a red light and slammed into a BMW containing three young women. Among them was Lidija Faamau, 21, who has now succumbed to her injuries after a month-long battle in the hospital.

The 17-year-old driver was reportedly on bail at the time of the fatal crash. He has been hit with eight serious offences, including charges related to the stolen vehicle and dangerous driving. Following the news of Ms. Faamau’s passing, it is expected that investigators will review the charges in consultation with the Director of Public Prosecutions.

NSW Police have stated:

The accused remains before the courts.

A critical incident investigation was launched to review the police pursuit protocols.

A report is being finalized for the Coroner to determine the exact cause of death and the sequence of events leading to the impact.

The two other passengers in the BMW have been discharged from the hospital, but the emotional toll on the survivors and the victims’ families remains profound.
