CANBERRA : In a quiet, intimate ceremony focused solely on family and commitment, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese married his partner, Jodie Haydon, at The Lodge this afternoon.
The private event, a history-making wedding for a sitting Australian leader, was a deeply personal affair, as the Prime Minister has often stressed. “It’s not a political event. It’s an event between myself and Jodie,” he had previously told reporters.
Albanese and Haydon, a financial services professional who grew up on the NSW Central Coast, first met in 2019 at a business dinner and immediately connected over their shared passion for the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team.
The Prime Minister spoke candidly about his decision to propose to Haydon on Valentine’s Day last year, a choice made after serious reflection. “I couldn’t imagine a life without her,” he said, reflecting on the simplicity of enjoying time together away from the political spotlight.
Crucially, Albanese shared that before proposing, he first discussed the decision with his son, Nathan, from his previous marriage. “I asked him to think about it, and then he came back to me and Nathan was supportive. He wants me to be happy,” the PM said.
The ceremony was a testament to the couple’s strong family focus. Haydon was walked down the aisle by her parents to the tune of Ben Folds’ “The Luckiest,” while the couple’s beloved dog, Toto, served in the distinguished role of ring bearer.
The newlyweds, who wrote their own vows for the occasion, concluded the ceremony walking out to Stevie Wonder’s “Sign, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours),” before heading off for a short, private honeymoon within Australia from Monday to Friday.
