200 Firefighters in Heroic Battle: Sydney Factory Blaze Threatens Days-Long Burn

SYDNEY, NSW — The massive response from Fire and Rescue NSW has been hailed as heroic after approximately 200 firefighters spent the night battling an extraordinary factory fire in Sydney’s west. The fire, which started late last night, is expected to continue burning for several days due to the nature of the materials involved.

Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at a waste management and recycling facility on Kurrajong Street, North St Marys, at about 10:50 pm. The initial moments were marked by sheer intensity: multiple, powerful explosions were heard and felt kilometres away in the Penrith area, sending a massive fireball 150 metres into the night sky.

The sheer force of the blast launched concrete blocks and rock chunks up to 150 metres, which initially complicated the suppression efforts.

Despite the dangerous conditions, the fire crews maintained control. Fire Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell commended the professionalism of the firefighters.

“We’ve had an incredibly large explosion, and so luckily all of our firefighters were able to be safe through that,” Commissioner Fewtrell said. “There’s been some amazing firefighting going on.”

Two firefighters sustained minor burns during the operation and were treated at the scene.

The blaze is located at a recycling center, meaning the inferno is being fed by various hazardous materials, preventing its immediate extinguishing and leading to warnings that it could persist for days.

A 200-metre exclusion zone has been established around the Kurrajong Street site. Due to the toxic smoke continuing to billow, authorities have urgently advised residents in the surrounding area to keep windows and doors tightly sealed.

The emergency response included the deployment of drones equipped with air monitoring devices to track the spread of toxic fumes. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, police are now conducting their own investigation into how the massive incident began. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the North St Marys area.
