Why Naveed Akram’s Move to Goulburn Supermax is a Significant Shift

GOULBURN : The transfer of 24-year-old Naveed Akram from a prison hospital to Goulburn Supermax marks a new phase in the aftermath of the December 14 Bondi terror attack. This move signals that authorities now consider Akram’s medical condition stable enough to be managed within the state’s most restrictive correctional environment.

Goulburn’s High Risk Management Correctional Centre (HRMCC), known as Supermax, is designed for inmates who pose an extreme risk to national security or the safety of the correctional system. For Akram, who is charged with a “terrorist act” alongside 15 counts of murder, the move ensures total isolation from the general prison population and specialized monitoring by elite Corrective Services staff.

The alleged attack occurred during the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebrations, a community event that turned into a scene of unprecedented carnage.

15 confirmed dead and over 40 injured.

Akram and his father, Sajid, were intercepted by police in a violent shootout. Sajid was killed at the scene, while Naveed was hospitalized under heavy guard.

With 59 offences currently on the charge sheet, legal experts suggest this will be one of the most complex terrorism trials in Australian history. The prosecution will likely focus on the motive behind the attack and the coordination between the father and son.

By placing Akram in Goulburn, the NSW government is sending a clear message regarding the management of high-stakes offenders. “Corrective Services takes its responsibility… incredibly seriously,” a government spokesperson noted, reiterating that the facility is the most secure in the state.

As the Bondi community continues to mourn the 15 lives lost, the focus now shifts to the Central Local Court, where Akram’s case will be mentioned in the coming months.
