SWITZERLAND : The Alpine community of Crans-Montana is in mourning following a catastrophic fire at Le Constellation bar that claimed multiple lives in the early hours of January 1, 2026. The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over one of Switzerland’s most vibrant tourist seasons.

Crans-Montana, located two hours east of Geneva, is a cornerstone of Swiss tourism, attracting over 3 million visitors annually. The resort is currently at peak capacity for the winter holidays, meaning the bar was likely filled with a mix of local residents and international tourists when the fire broke out at 1:30 am.

While official numbers are still being tallied, the initial report of “many dead” suggests one of the deadliest fires in the region’s recent history. Police spokesperson Gaëtan Lathion emphasized the difficulty of the situation: “We’re just at the beginning of our investigation, but this is an internationally renowned ski resort with lots of tourists.”

Multiple fatalities and injuries confirmed; dozens were seen fleeing the building.

The fire began during the height of New Year celebrations, roughly 90 minutes after the countdown.

Authorities have urged the public to use the official helpline rather than attempting to reach the site, as emergency services continue to secure the perimeter. The Alpine resort’s proximity to the Matterhorn and its status as a luxury destination mean that embassies from across Europe are likely to be involved in the identification process.

As the smoke clears over the Swiss Alps, the focus shifts to a thorough investigation into safety protocols and fire prevention measures at the historic resort’s nightlife venues.
