Trump Hits Iran’s Trade Partners with 25% Tariff Amid Deadly Crackdown
Following reports of 600 deaths in Iran protests, President Trump imposes a 25% tariff on countries trading with Tehran. Military action remains “on the table.”
Ukraine: President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken decisive action following a worsening corruption scandal, accepting the resignation of his closest confidant, Andriy Yermak, the Head of the Office of the President. The move, forced by an anti-corruption raid on Yermak’s apartment, is being heralded by some as proof of the strength of Ukraine’s democracy, even during wartime.
Journalist Olga Rudenko noted that for a young democracy, having independent institutions strong enough to investigate the “most powerful man in the country” is a major democratic achievement.
Domestically, Yermak’s downfall is likely to be viewed favorably. He had become a deeply unpopular figure who, according to analyst Nataliya Gumenyuk, “somehow aggregated all the dissatisfaction with what the president does wrong.”
Yermak was often described as a “shadow prime minister” who exerted immense influence, effectively hand-picking cabinet officials. His departure is seen by Zelensky’s own party as a necessary “reset” to maintain public trust following several scandals, including an alleged bust-up with his former army chief and controversial mobilization policies.
While the public may accept Zelensky’s framing of the resignation as a positive step, the crisis is far from over. A former government official argued the move came too late, suggesting that many Ukrainians are now asking what Zelensky knew about the actions of his long-time associate.
The scandal also touches Timur Mindich, an alleged mastermind of the kickback scheme and a former business partner and close friend of President Zelensky. The official questioned: “Do you really think the president wasn’t aware about this?”
Yermak’s loyalty to Zelensky was unquestioned—”He does what I tell him,” the President once said. However, this co-dependency has now left Zelensky highly vulnerable. As the President begins consultations for a replacement, he must contend with the appearance of chaos at the heart of power while navigating an escalating internal crisis and an unforgiving war
