Super Typhoon Fung-wong battered the northern Philippines with ferocious intensity, creating a night of terror that included near zero visibility due to wind and rain.

\”We could not sleep last night because of the winds hitting our metal sheets and the tree branches falling,\” said resident Romeo Mariano from Isabela province, where extensive damage to homes, including fallen electric posts, was reported.

The storm’s impact immediately translated into chaos for the country\’s travel sector. The civil aviation regulator confirmed that over 400 flights have been cancelled since Sunday, severely disrupting air travel across the main island of Luzon and beyond.

Fung-wong, which made landfall in Aurora province as a super typhoon, has caused at least two deaths and cut off crucial infrastructure, making at least three towns inaccessible due to landslides and broken roads.

The state weather agency reported that the typhoon is now moving over the South China Sea and is forecast to shift northeast toward Taiwan. However, officials warned that the outer bands of the storm mean a large portion of the country remains under threat of heavy rains, severe winds, and dangerous storm swells in coastal areas.

Fung-wong marks the 21st significant storm to strike the Philippines this year, immediately succeeding Typhoon Kalmaegi.
