Palmer\’s \’Shiver\’ Trademark: What It Means for Commercial Use vs. On-Pitch Imitation

Cole Palmer of Chelsea celebrates scoring his team\'s second goal.

Chelsea’s star player Cole Palmer has successfully registered his signature \’shiver\’ goal celebration with the UK government, a move that provides a legal shield around his rapidly growing commercial brand, \’Cold Palmer.\’

The trademark, registered through the UK\’s Intellectual Property Office until 2034, gives Palmer exclusive rights over the commercial use of the gesture, which he first performed after scoring against Luton Town.

While the trademark is a powerful financial tool, it is important to note its legal limitations. The protection only concerns commercial ventures:

Protected: Use on clothing, in advertising, or any profit-driven context requires Palmer\’s permission.

Not Protected: The trademark does not prevent other players—such as Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young, who is known for a similar gesture—from performing the shiver on the pitch. Nor does it prevent fans from copying the gesture in tribute.

If a company attempts to capitalize on the shiver celebration, they must now seek licensing from the Chelsea midfielder.

Palmer’s decision to protect his intellectual property (IP) is a modern trend among elite athletes who recognize their on-field actions as valuable assets. He joins a list of global icons who have secured their signature poses or quotes:

Gareth Bale trademarked his \’eleven of hearts\’ celebration.

Erling Haaland secured his unique \’zen\’ celebration in Norway.

\"\"

Usain Bolt registered a logo depicting his famous \’lightning bolt\’ pose.

Palmer\’s move ensures he maintains control over his image as his star continues to rise both in the Premier League and in global sports culture.
