Pat Cummins Defends Ageing Test XI Amid Looming Mass Retirement Risk

While Australia’s senior Test squad battles age concerns, a wave of impressive young talent in the domestic arena is giving selection chief George Bailey plenty of reasons for optimism. Both current captain Pat Cummins and former legend Greg Chappell have highlighted the depth of the pathway system.

\”I think it\’s quite exciting to think of some of the young talent that\’s playing Sheffield Shield cricket at the moment. We might be looking forward to another really good era,\” Chappell noted this week.

The best evidence of this potential comes from Victoria, whose recent demolition of a Test-heavy NSW side featured six players aged 25 and under, signalling a profound shift in the domestic landscape.

The right-arm quick is nearing 150 first-class wickets before his 25th birthday, averaging just over 20—eye-catching numbers that have smart judges tipping him for higher honours soon.

At just 23, Kellaway is already pencilled in as a future Test opener and a strong candidate to replace Usman Khawaja. Victorian coach Chris Rogers called his recent half-century against an attack featuring Starc and Hazlewood a \”real tick,\” proving he could be the successor to Khawaja.

The young talent isn\’t exclusive to Victoria. Other states are also producing Test hopefuls in the 25-and-under bracket:

Sam Konstas (already has Test experience), Will Salzmann, and Oliver Davies.

All-rounder Cooper Connolly (22), who has already gained international experience across all three formats.

All-rounder Liam Scott, a permanent Shield fixture.

Even beneath the Shield level, Chappell highlighted a group of graduates from the successful U19s World Cup campaign, including Mahli Beardman, Hugh Weibgen, and Callum Vidler, who are now gaining exposure in Shield, Big Bash, and List A cricket.

As Cummins suggests, \”there\’s lots of younger guys knocking on the door,\” reinforcing the belief that while the transition will be challenging, the talent pool is robust enough to sustain Australia\’s success.
