Whitney Slams Stokes\’ England as Unprepared for Perth Ashes Battle

Australian cricket legend Mike Whitney has delivered a brutal assessment of England\’s Ashes preparation, dismissing Captain Ben Stokes\’ defence of their short lead-up as inadequate for a five-Test series down under.

Whitney\’s comments come as Australia faces its own crisis, having lost captain Pat Cummins and pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood to injury for the first Test in Perth.

England\’s warm-up consisted solely of a three-day centre-wicket practice match against England\’s second-tier side (the Lions) at Lilac Hill Park. Stokes defended the approach by saying, \”cricket has changed so much,\” but Whitney was having none of it.

\”I\’ve heard Ben Stokes say, \’Oh, you know, we\’re playing a lot of cricket these days and things change over the decades\’,\” Whitney told Wide World of Sports. \”Preparation never changes, bro.\”

Whitney echoed the sentiment of fellow English legend Ian Botham, who called the approach one that \”borders on arrogance,\” especially given England\’s long struggle to win a Test series in Australia.

Despite the injury crisis that sees Australia lose Cummins (back) and Hazlewood (hamstring) alongside reserve quick Sean Abbott, Whitney argues the pendulum still swings toward the hosts because of their deep knowledge of the Optus Stadium conditions.

\”All those [Australian] boys have played there. They know what the conditions are,\” Whitney said. \”You\’re gonna get bounce and carry if the conditions are right… The pendulum still swings in our favour.\”

The absence of Cummins and Hazlewood paves the way for the expected Test debut of South Australian quick Brendan Doggett (who boasts 190 first-class wickets at 26.46). Doggett, along with Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland, will form a new-look pace attack tasked with defending the psychological advantage Australia holds over an undercooked England side.
