Swindon Town Defends Captain Ollie Clarke Against FA Ruling
Swindon Town condemns the FA’s decision to ban captain Ollie Clarke, questioning the “balance of probabilities” used in the sexual misconduct ruling.
Australia: England captain Ben Stokes is focused on rallying his squad and restoring the connection with disappointed fans following the stunning two-day loss to Australia in the first Ashes Test. Speaking during the team’s five days of pink-ball training in Brisbane, Stokes admitted the performance tested the connection rebuilt with supporters since he and coach Brendon McCullum took over in 2022.
“We know that there’ll be a lot of disappointed fans after that first defeat,” Stokes said. “We’re absolutely desperate to come home with that goal from before we started the series, which is to win the Ashes, and doing absolutely everything within our powers…”
The pivotal moment in Perth was England’s second-innings collapse, where the team threw away a 105-run lead by losing nine wickets for 99 runs. Stokes stated that the team has addressed this failure head-on.
“The important thing we need to do as a team and individuals is learn from it,” he explained. “We have identified those moments and spoken about them as a group.”
While critics have questioned the team’s ultra-aggressive ‘Bazball’ style, Stokes pointed to the success of Australia’s Travis Head, whose second-fastest Ashes century showcased controlled aggression. Stokes insisted the team must “stay true to the beliefs of how we play our cricket,” while accepting that execution could have been better.
The decision to skip a pink-ball match in Canberra, despite the extra time available, was made to prioritize team morale and keep the starting XI together, according to Stokes. The team is instead focusing on specialized training in Brisbane ahead of the second Test, a day-nighter at the Gabba starting Thursday, 4 December.
Three players not in the first Test XI—Jacob Bethell, Josh Tongue, and Matthew Potts—have been sent to the Lions fixture, while the rest of the squad, barring the resting Mark Wood, trained in Brisbane on Saturday.
Stokes accepted the ensuing media criticism, stating, “We’ll take the rough with the smooth,” but made it clear the focus is now entirely on leveling the series.
