Matildas Bounce Back With Dominant 5–0 Rout of the Ferns

Australia: The Matildas delivered a performance marked by tactical discipline and attacking fluidity, securing a 5-0 win over New Zealand that served as a powerful corrective to the issues seen in their previous 3-0 loss to England.

With their high defensive line and aggressive press, the Matildas were firmly in control throughout. Coach Tony Gustavsson’s decision to start attacking midfielder Amy Sayer in place of resting star striker Sam Kerr paid immediate dividends, with Sayer securing the opening goal in the 13th minute after a perfectly weighted ball from Katrina Gorry.

Leading 2-0 at the half, the Matildas seized absolute control in the second 45 minutes, settling the pace and demonstrating clinical finishing. This dominance was highlighted by a rapid-fire double strike from Ellie Carpenter and Kyra Cooney-Cross, whose spectacular 35-metre shot was the goal of the night.

Despite the margin, the coaching staff remained focused on preparation, making mass substitutions in the second half to test depth. Kaitlyn Torpey, Holly McNamara, and Michelle Heyman came on, replacing the entire starting front line, while further changes introduced Tameka Yallop and Clare Wheeler (who set up the fifth goal for Gorry).

The performance was not without minor flaws. Defender Alanna Kennedy was absent due to a suspension carried over from the last match. While the defense largely held firm, keeper Anna Leat proved a thorn in the Matildas’ side late, making a redeeming save against an effort from Caitlin Foord and brilliantly denying Steph Catley from the penalty spot in added time.

The two teams will face off again in Adelaide on Tuesday evening, offering the Matildas a final opportunity to refine their strategy before the pressure mounts to host the 2026 Asian Cup.
