Archer Heroics Keep England’s Ashes Hopes Alive Despite Carey’s Century

ADELAIDE: England battled with intense character and effort on a dramatic and highly emotional opening day in Adelaide, preventing Australia from taking complete control, despite Alex Carey’s controversial century guiding the hosts to 326-8 at stumps.

On a slow pitch under baking 34-degree heat, England’s attack, spearheaded by the outstanding Jofra Archer (3-29 from 16 overs), never wilted. The tourists showcased the resolve demanded by captain Ben Stokes, whose dressing room, he has previously stated, is “no place for weak men.”

The day was poignant, starting with a moment of silence and a performance of ‘True Blue’ to honour the victims of the Bondi Beach shooting. Australia were also hit by the late withdrawal of premier batter Steve Smith due to dizziness and nausea, though he is expected to be fit for the fourth Test.

Smith’s replacement, Usman Khawaja, seized his unexpected chance with 82. Khawaja, a day shy of his 39th birthday, steadied the innings after early wickets, despite being dropped by Harry Brook at second slip on five. He was eventually dismissed sweeping Will Jacks into the hands of deep square leg.

Australia’s anchor was wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who scored a composed 106 on his home ground, carrying profound personal meaning following the passing of his father in September. His knock was not without controversy: on 72, he was reprieved by TV Umpire Chris Gaffaney after England reviewed a caught behind appeal off Josh Tongue, which Carey later admitted to edging. Carey later drove Ben Stokes through the covers to reach three figures, celebrating with a look to the sky.

The partnership of 91 between Khawaja and Carey, followed by a 50-run stand between Carey and Mitchell Starc, ensured Australia did not waste the opportunity to bat first.

For all the talk of errors in previous Tests, England’s attitude and effort could not be faulted. Archer was a constant threat, bowling with high pace and miserly economy. He dismissed Jake Weatherald in the first hour and then produced leg-side pokes from Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green in the first over after lunch.

However, the bowling was mixed:

  • Brydon Carse, the replacement for Mark Wood, was too short with the new ball and leaked runs at more than five an over, bowling six no-balls.
  • Part-time off-spinner Will Jacks struggled to hold an end, returning 2-105 from his 20 overs.

The Brook drop of Khawaja and Carse putting down a difficult chance from Carey on 52 highlighted crucial lapses. Nonetheless, Zak Crawley’s stunning one-handed catch to dismiss Travis Head showed the fielding was largely blemish-free otherwise.

England will return on Thursday morning with a second new ball only three overs old. They have the chance to dismiss Australia for a par total, but their true test—batting to stay in the series on a forecast hotter day—awaits.
