Toshakhana-II Verdict Sparks Crisis of Confidence in Pakistan’s Judiciary

LAHORE : The sentencing of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 17 years of rigorous imprisonment has triggered a fierce debate over the impartiality of Pakistan’s legal system. The case centers on the alleged undervaluing of a Bulgari jewelry set—valued at over PKR 71 million—gifted by the Saudi Crown Prince in 2021.

A ‘Spectacle’ of Justice? While the court cited criminal breach of trust and corruption, residents in Lahore and Peshawar have expressed deep skepticism. “The judiciary has become so weak that the public no longer has confidence in its rulings,” said Hamid Riaz Doger, a Lahore resident. Many point to the “haste” of the judgment as evidence of political engineering.

Key Legal Contentions:

  • Khan’s legal team argues they were “not even heard” before the judge delivered the 59-page verdict.
  • PTI lawyers point out that this is a second punishment for similar charges, which they claim violates international principles of justice.
  • Critics argue that conducting the trial inside Adiala Jail instead of an open court has further damaged the credibility of the findings.

Looking Ahead: The High Court Challenge Despite the sentence, Khan remains resolute. His legal team is preparing to challenge the verdict in the Islamabad High Court (IHC). Meanwhile, the Insaf Lawyers Forum has been directed to take the lead in defending constitutional supremacy, as the country braces for a period of heightened political instability and potential civil unrest.
