Is Moscow Facing a Targeted Bombing Campaign?

MOSCOW: The fatal explosion on Yeletskaya Street today, which killed two traffic police officers and a bystander, has sent shockwaves through the Russian capital. Coming just 48 hours after the high-profile assassination of a senior military official, questions are mounting over a potential breach in city security.

Today’s attack follows the Monday car-bombing of Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov. The General was killed when an explosive device planted under his vehicle was detonated in the heart of the capital.

While the Investigative Committee has labeled today’s incident as an “attempt on the lives of traffic police,” the proximity in timing to the General’s death suggests a heightened level of coordinated militant or insurgent activity within Moscow.

Unlike Monday’s targeted assassination of a specific high-ranking individual, today’s blast occurred during a routine stop of a “suspicious individual.” This suggests one of two scenarios:

The suspect may have been transportive or preparing a different device and detonated it to avoid capture.

A shift toward targeting rank-and-file law enforcement to sow broader instability.

Svetlana Petrenko of the Investigative Committee has indicated that the search for co-conspirators is underway. With two explosive events in the span of three days, residents can expect a significant increase in security checkpoints and “stop-and-search” operations across the city’s transport hubs and police posts.
