Scars of Success and Squad Strain as Arsenal Edge Brave Palace

NORTH LONDON : While the scoreboard shows Arsenal moving into the Carabao Cup last four, the performance left Mikel Arteta visibly agitated in the technical area. On a night that should have been a celebration of squad depth, the Gunners looked a shadow of the side that dominated the early season.

The headline for Arsenal fans was the return of Gabriel Jesus, making his first start in 345 days following a grueling ACL recovery. However, the lack of rhythm was palpable. Arteta made eight changes to his starting XI, and the result was a disjointed display that struggled to break down a well-drilled Palace defense.

Even when Arsenal took the lead via a Lacroix own goal, they lacked the clinical edge to finish the game. William Saliba’s “needless” late foul, which led to the Palace equalizer, highlighted a lapse in concentration that nearly cost the Gunners their season.

For Crystal Palace, the defeat is bitter, but the performance confirms their status as a rising power in 2025. Having already secured the FA Cup and Community Shield this year, the Eagles are competing in Europe while managing a relatively small squad.

Oliver Glasner’s men looked exhausted at Leeds earlier in the week, yet they found the reserve to push a “top-four” Arsenal side to the absolute limit. With Chris Richards adding to an injury list that includes Daniel Munoz and a struggling Jean-Philippe Mateta, Glasner is essentially performing a miracle to keep Palace competitive across three fronts.

Arsenal are through, but they are wobbling. With recent points dropped against Sunderland and Chelsea, they are a team searching for their identity. Facing Chelsea in the semi-finals will require a level of performance far beyond what was shown on Wednesday night.

For Palace, the focus returns to Europe and the league, where their “never say die” attitude remains their greatest asset under Glasner.
