Washington DC: President Donald Trump has announced that the United States military conducted a series of powerful and deadly airstrikes against Islamic State (IS) militants in northwestern Nigeria on Christmas Day. Describing the targets as terrorist scum, the US President framed the military action as a direct response to what he characterized as the systematic killing of innocent Christians in the region.

According to the President, the Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, fulfilling a warning he issued in November when he first directed the Pentagon to prepare for potential intervention in the West African nation.

President Trump last month ordered the US military to prepare for action in Nigeria

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed that the operation took place in Sokoto State in coordination with Nigerian authorities. While the US administration emphasized the protection of religious minorities, the Nigerian government described the hit as a joint precision operation aimed at eliminating broader terrorist threats. Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar clarified that the mission was a structured security cooperation intended to address violent extremism regardless of religious affiliation.

He noted that the intelligence leading to the strikes had been shared between the two nations for some time, highlighting the bilateral nature of the engagement.

Despite the heavy rhetoric from Washington regarding religious-based violence, local observers and violence-monitoring groups maintain that the insurgency in Nigeria continues to impact both Muslims and Christians across the north. President Bola Tinubu’s administration has consistently pushed back against the narrative of a single-faith genocide, emphasizing that the security challenges are a national crisis affecting all citizens.

Nevertheless, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s cooperation following the strikes, signaling a significant escalation in US military involvement in West African counter-terrorism efforts under the current administration.
