Tarique Rahman Files Nomination for Dhaka-17 in 13th JS Election

DHAKA : The formal entry of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman into the race for Dhaka-17 has sent immediate shockwaves through the political arena, prompting strategic shifts even among allied and independent candidates.

In a notable sign of respect and political realignment, Andaleeve Rahman Partho, Chairman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP), announced he would shift his focus to the Bhola-1 constituency. Partho, who previously served as an MP for Bhola-1 with BNP backing in 2008, withdrew from any potential contention in Dhaka to clear the path for the BNP leader.

Choosing Dhaka-17 is a calculated move by the BNP. As a constituency that includes high-profile residential and diplomatic zones, it serves as a symbolic “heart of the capital.” By contesting this seat, Tarique Rahman is not only seeking a return to parliament but is also aiming to re-establish the BNP’s dominance in Dhaka’s political narrative following his 17-year absence.

Campaigning is expected to intensify as the final list of candidates is vetted.

Election day for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

While Abdus Salam and other party leaders express confidence in a “spontaneous” victory, the candidacy faces the scrutiny of an electorate that has evolved significantly during Rahman’s exile. This election will serve as a definitive test of Tarique Rahman’s personal popularity and the BNP’s organizational strength as they transition from a decade of street-level politics back to the parliamentary floor.
