Bangladesh Mourns ‘Uncompromising’ Leader Begum Khaleda Zia

DHAKA: The death of Begum Khaleda Zia marks the conclusion of one of the most significant chapters in the history of Bangladesh. As her flag-wrapped mortuary van reached the National Parliament Complex on Wednesday, it signaled the final farewell to a leader who defined the country’s democratic struggle for over four decades.

Widely regarded as an “uncompromising leader,” Khaleda Zia rose to prominence following the assassination of her husband, President Ziaur Rahman. She led the BNP through various democratic movements, eventually becoming the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 1991, and serving three terms in total.

The morning of December 31st saw a massive outpouring of grief across Dhaka:

Departure from Evercare Hospital amidst tight security.

Arrival at her long-time residence, Firoza, for family rituals.

Entry into the National Parliament Complex for the state-level janaza.

The arrival of Tarique Rahman, accompanied by his wife Zubaida and daughter Zaima, underscores the transition within the BNP leadership. Their presence at the janaza venue at Manik Mia Avenue was met with an emotional response from the thousands of party activists who had gathered since dawn.

As the nation observes a period of mourning, the legacy of Khaleda Zia remains a cornerstone of the nationalist movement in Bangladesh, representing a fierce commitment to the principles of parliamentary democracy.
