Caleb Jewell celebrates his ton.

DOMESTIC CRICKET —  The latest round of domestic cricket provided a mixed bag of results for players vying for spots in the Australian Test lineup, with Matt Renshaw solidifying his position while rival openers struggled.

Matt Renshaw, opening for Queensland, continued his consistent form by scoring a valuable half-century against Victoria, a performance that keeps the pressure squarely on the current Australian Test openers.

Meanwhile, a key rival for a potential opening position, Cameron Bancroft (Western Australia), failed to deliver, managing only 9 runs against South Australia.

While not directly impacting the opening spot, Tasmanian opener Caleb Jewell delivered the highlight of the weekend, scoring a superb 102 against NSW. Jewell anchored the innings—even after a highly unorthodox opening partnership with spinner Matt Kuhnemann (21)—before eventually nicking off to off-spinner Ollie Davies at first slip. Jewell\’s century came in response to the NSW declaration at 9-391, built by Kurtis Patterson (80) and finished by a strong bowling display from Riley Meredith (3-77).

Across the country, the touring England Lions played a fixture against the Cricket Australia XI at Lilac Hill. This match was a key opportunity for English Test hopefuls to make a statement, particularly against the incumbent opener Zak Crawley.

However, both key hopefuls made starts but failed to convert:

Jacob Bethell, batting at number three, missed his chance to heap pressure on Crawley, falling for 44.

Fellow England hopeful Will Jacks also failed to register a big score, finishing his innings with 30.

These missed opportunities will ease the pressure on the English selectors, allowing the focus to remain on the ongoing Test series preparations.
