Swindon Town Defends Captain Ollie Clarke Against FA Ruling
Swindon Town condemns the FA’s decision to ban captain Ollie Clarke, questioning the “balance of probabilities” used in the sexual misconduct ruling.
LONDON : Manchester City’s thrilling 5-4 victory over Fulham was a feast for the neutral, but a severe cause for concern for manager Pep Guardiola and the club’s title aspirations. The chaotic nature of the win has amplified the growing alarm over the team’s defensive frailties, which are increasingly threatening to undermine their prolific attack.
The statistics highlight the rarity of the result: this was the first time City has won a league match while conceding four goals since December 1957. More worryingly, City have conceded a staggering 16 goals in just 14 Premier League games this season—more than double the seven goals conceded by league leaders Arsenal in 13 matches.
“You can’t expect to win the Premier League when you defend like that,” former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison stated on BBC Radio 5 Live. “There’s a problem with Manchester City defensively… you’d never see Arsenal be 5-1 up and end like that.”
For a team accustomed to iron-clad defenses during title runs, the current form is a significant anomaly. The 16 goals conceded mark only the second time in Guardiola’s Premier League title-winning era (the other being 2023-24) that City have been this vulnerable at this stage of the season. The defensive slide has been rapid, with 10 goals conceded in their latest four games in all competitions, compared to just three in the four matches prior.
Guardiola, while taking the three points, acknowledged the concern, stating the experience “will help us in future games.”
“In the end, it was a question of character, resilience and defence,” he added, hopeful that the recent lapses can be quickly rectified.
However, the contrast with Arsenal’s relentless consistency is stark. While City’s attacking strength, spearheaded by Erling Haaland, remains worthy of champions, the defense is currently lagging way behind, offering a genuine lifeline to their rivals in the race for the Premier League crown.
