Dubai: In a modern-day reimagining of the classic “Battle of the Sexes,” Australian maverick Nick Kyrgios defeated women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets at the Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday night. Kyrgios, currently ranked 671st as he continues his recovery from long-term injury, secured a 6-3, 6-3 victory in approximately 70 minutes.

Despite the pre-match hype—where Sabalenka jokingly promised to “kick Nick’s ass” on US television—the contest was played with a lighthearted, exhibition-style atmosphere. Sabalenka, who finished 2025 at the top of the WTA rankings, showed flashes of her trademark power but was hamstrung by the experimental “Equalizer” rules. Following the match, the 27-year-old Belarusian remained optimistic, stating she enjoyed the “great fight” and already has “tactics in mind” for a potential rematch.

For Kyrgios, the win serves as a crucial fitness test as he prepares for a full return to the ATP Tour in 2026. The 30-year-old relied on tactical variety, including several of his signature “underarm” and “no-look” shots, to keep the world number one off balance.

Both players shared a warm embrace at the net, acknowledging the event’s role in bringing a younger audience to the sport.
