Amorim Faces Tactical Crisis as Man Utd Struggle for Offensive Fluidity

MANCHESTER : The 1-1 draw against a Wolves side that hadn’t won in 23 games has exposed the growing pains of the Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United. Despite individual flashes of brilliance, the Red Devils ended 2025 looking like a collection of individuals rather than a cohesive unit.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Amorim was blunt about his team’s performance. “The fluidity offensively wasn’t there. There is a lack of connections at the moment,” he admitted. This lack of “connection” was evident as United struggled to break down a low block that has been porous for most of the season.

The talking point of the evening was Amorim’s decision to withdraw goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee for youngster Jack Fletcher at halftime. The tactical shift, aimed at gaining control of the midfield, seemed to blunt United’s attacking edge.

Amorim defended the move: “Sometimes you can attack better with less strikers. We played with three strikers and sometimes that’s not the best thing to attack well.” While the intent was to bypass Wolves’ packed midfield, it left Benjamin Sesko isolated for much of the second period.

United sit 6th in the standings, but the gap to the top four is becoming a chasm. With 30 points from 19 games, United are averaging just over 1.5 points per match—a rate that rarely secures Champions League football.

As the January transfer window opens, Amorim faces a choice: persist with a system that his current squad is struggling to implement, or adapt his philosophy to salvage the season. “This game is over… you can move on and go to the next one,” Amorim concluded, but the fans at Old Trafford will be demanding more than just “moving on” in 2026.
