Tears in Court: Driver Acquitted After Fatal Road Rage Battle Culminates in Browns Plains Collision

The curtain closed today on a tragic four-day trial in the Brisbane Supreme Court that detailed how a seemingly minor traffic incident spiralled into a fatal confrontation that destroyed two families.

The jury found driver Al Enizi not guilty of the murder and manslaughter of Vandenberg, accepting the defence\’s argument that the fatal collision was an act of \”instinctive\” self-defence.

The court heard a chilling narrative of escalation between the two strangers on September 17, 2021:

Initial Confrontation: The incident began when Vandenberg, wearing only underwear, confronted Al Enizi at traffic lights, accusing him of cutting him off. The pair were seen throwing punches before driving away.

Because the men lived in neighbouring suburbs, the tension escalated as they became convinced they were following one another.

The dispute reached a climax in Browns Plains. After kicking Al Enizi’s vehicle, Vandenberg pulled over, retrieved a hammer from his car, and ran into the road. Al Enizi swerved, striking Vandenberg with his vehicle, causing injuries that led to his death.

Defence barrister Saul Holt successfully argued that Al Enizi acted in fear, stating \”every time Mr Al Enizi had stopped his car he had been attacked.\”

The emotional impact of the verdict was clear: Al Enizi blinked back tears upon hearing the outcome, while members of Vandenberg’s family were overcome with grief and quickly exited the courtroom. Both parties left the court without speaking to the media.
