Jubo Dal Leader Shot Dead in Pallabi as Dhaka Registers Nearly 200 Murders in 10 Months

A spate of targeted gun violence has heightened concerns over law and order in Dhaka, even as the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) maintains that the city\’s overall murder rate is at a \”manageable level.\”

The most recent incident saw Golam Kibria, the member secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal\’s Pallabi thana unit, gunned down in the city\’s Pallabi area late last night. This killing marks the third person shot dead by illegal firearms in the capital over the last eight days, including a top-listed criminal.

Police have commenced a detailed investigation into the political killing, working to identify the assailants and trace the illegal firearms used in the attack.

The recent surge in targeted attacks contrasts with the DMP\’s overall assessment of the murder rate. According to data shared by Talebur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of the DMP\’s Media and Public Relations Division, the capital has recorded at least 198 murder cases over the past 10 months.

DC Rahman defended the statistics, stating that the average of roughly 20 murders per month is acceptable given the capital\’s size and socio-economic landscape.

\”Considering Dhaka\’s population and socio-economic dynamics, the number of incidents is at a manageable level,\” said Rahman.

The police categorize a wide array of tragic incidents as murder cases, including those stemming from simple family disputes, long-standing enmity, and violent conflicts related to \”dominance establishing.\” Rahman added that the force has been successful in solving the majority of these cases and arresting the perpetrators.

The fatal shooting of the Jubo Dal leader, however, underscores the persistent danger posed by the presence of illegal weapons and the prevalence of organized violence in key areas of the megacity.
