DHAKA — The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today heard a critical case related to the violence during the July uprising, as two army officers were brought before the court in connection with the killing of 28 people in the Rampura area of Dhaka.
The officers produced were BGB Lieutenant Colonel Redowanul Islam and former BGB Major Md Rafat Bin Alam.
The appearance before the ICT marks the official transfer of the officers into the civilian judicial process. They had initially been in military custody before being produced before the tribunal on October 22. At that time, the ICT-1 formally showed them arrested and ordered they be sent to jail.
On Monday, Redowanul and Rafat were transported to the tribunal under heavy security from the Dhaka Cantonment sub-jail in a dedicated air-conditioned prison van.
The total number of individuals accused in the case is four. The remaining two accused, both former civilian officials, have not yet been apprehended:
Md Rashedul Islam, former Khilgaon Additional Deputy Commissioner.
Md Moshior Rahman, former Rampura Officer-in-charge.
Both Rashedul and Moshior Rahman remain fugitives, raising concerns about the full scope of accountability for the deadly events in Rampura during the widespread civil unrest. The ongoing tribunal proceedings aim to prosecute those responsible for the mass killings and the violent suppression of the protests.
