Iconic Graffiti Artist HOBEKI? Trades Rifle for Paintbrush in New Agargaon Mural

DHAKA: The enigmatic street artist known as HOBEKI? has once again captivated Dhaka with a new installment in the highly influential Subodh graffiti series. The mural quietly emerged on a wall in Agargaon, a location historically significant as the site of Subodh’s first appearance in 2017.

The timing of the artwork’s debut is anything but accidental: it appeared on Victory Day, compelling the nation to reflect on the meaning of freedom and the “unfinished conversation” between the past and present struggles.

The latest mural represents a profound thematic evolution for the character. In this depiction, Subodh is reimagined as a “soldier of art”. His “weapon” is not a rifle, but a bundle of paintbrushes and spray cans.

The composition is deeply tender: Subodh kneels gently before a little girl holding the Bangladesh flag, kissing her forehead in a gesture of protection and hope. The military helmet, typically a symbol of conflict, rests softly on the girl’s head, symbolizing a passing of guardianship.

This shift transforms the archetype of the soldier into a figure of deep humanity—an artist, a guardian, and a witness. It powerfully reinforces a recurring message within the Subodh series: that genuine resistance is found through compassion, creativity, and care, rather than violence.

The return to Agargaon, following Subodh’s last appearance at the Dhaka University Metro Station in August 2024, traces a full circle for the anonymous artist.

With this latest work, HOBEKI? once again allows the public wall to speak on a day when Bangladesh remembers the cost of its hard-won independence and reflects on what its citizens must continue to protect.
