Stardom and Scrutiny: The Polarizing Double Life of Brigitte Bardot

Brigitte Bardot’s death at 91 marks the end of a life that was as divisive as it was celebrated. While her early years were defined by cinematic brilliance, her later decades were increasingly overshadowed by her extremist political views and legal troubles.

Bardot’s transition from screen siren to political firebrand was marked by five separate convictions in French courts for inciting racial hatred. Her diatribes against the influx of immigrants, particularly the Muslim community in France, saw her fall from public grace among many of her former admirers.

Her political shift was often linked to her 1992 marriage to Bernard d’Ormale, an adviser to Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the National Front. Bardot remained a staunch supporter of the party (now National Rally), even writing letters of support for Marine Le Pen during her presidential bids.

Even in her 80s, Bardot did not shy away from controversy. In 2018, she labeled the #MeToo movement “hypocritical” and “ridiculous,” arguing that many actresses played “the tease” with producers to land roles.

Statistics of a Storied Career
Films: 28 major motion pictures.
Marriages: 4.
Honors: Legion of Honor (1985).
Legal: 5 convictions for hate speech.

Despite the controversies, Bardot remains an indelible part of the French identity—a woman who lived entirely on her own terms, from the movie sets of Paris to the quiet seclusion of her animal sanctuary in Saint-Tropez.
