DHAKA — Begum Khaleda Zia, the three-time former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), has passed away. She breathed her last at approximately 6:00 AM on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, while undergoing treatment for prolonged illnesses. She was 80 years old.

The veteran leader had been suffering from multiple health complications, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and kidney issues. Despite being under intensive medical supervision by a dedicated medical board, her condition deteriorated sharply in the early hours of Tuesday.

As news of her passing spread, a wave of grief swept across the country. Supporters and party leaders have begun gathering at the BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters and her Gulshan residence.

The President of Bangladesh expressed profound sorrow, describing her as a “shining pillar of democracy.”

The party stated that the nation has lost a “guardian” and an “uncompromising leader.”

Preparations for her Namaz-e-Janaza (funeral prayers) are currently underway, with details expected to be announced by the party office later today.
