Trump Hits Iran’s Trade Partners with 25% Tariff Amid Deadly Crackdown
Following reports of 600 deaths in Iran protests, President Trump imposes a 25% tariff on countries trading with Tehran. Military action remains “on the table.”
WASHINGTON : Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has declared that her country faces a “decisive moment” as United States President Donald Trump renews threats to seize Greenland. The standoff comes as Frederiksen and other European leaders head to Washington, DC, for high-stakes meetings regarding the global scramble for Arctic raw materials.
Speaking in a debate with Danish political leaders, Frederiksen was firm: “This is a decisive moment with stakes that go beyond the immediate issue of Greenland’s future.” In a subsequent statement, she reinforced that Denmark is “ready to defend our values—wherever it is necessary,” citing international law and the right to self-determination as non-negotiable.
Germany and Sweden have moved quickly to form a united front with Copenhagen.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson condemned the “threatening rhetoric” coming from Washington, warning that a US takeover would be a “violation of international law” and would encourage global instability.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadehpul held urgent talks in Iceland before meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stressing that Arctic security is a “common interest in NATO” that cannot be settled unilaterally.
The tension is fueled by Greenland’s immense deposits of rare earth minerals and its strategic position. While Trump claims Washington will “do something on Greenland, whether they like it or not” to counter Russian and Chinese influence, local sentiment remains staunchly opposed.
Despite historical ties to Denmark, Greenland is a self-governing territory with its own home rule. Current polls indicate that the local population is overwhelmingly opposed to a US takeover. As leaders descend on Washington, the central question remains whether the US will seek a collaborative security partnership or continue a path of rhetoric that Swedish leaders say “risks encouraging other countries to act in exactly the same way.”
