Boeing Eyes Narrow-Body Lease Agreement with Bangladesh

DHAKA: In a strategic move to address the growing aviation demands of Bangladesh, Boeing Vice President Paul Righi held a high-level meeting on Monday with the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The discussion centered on a potential lease agreement that could see a fresh influx of narrow-body aircraft into the country’s fleet.

Paul Righi specifically expressed Boeing’s interest in providing aircraft from the Boeing 737 series on a lease basis. This move is seen as a tactical response to the current market need for fuel-efficient, narrow-body jets capable of servicing high-density domestic and regional routes.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam (Rita) emphasized the urgency of the leasing process, citing the need to bolster the country’s aviation capacity “as quickly as possible.”

The meeting included a review of potential agreements initiated during the tenure of the former interim government, ensuring a transition of bilateral commercial interests.

Operational Demands: With passenger numbers rising and regional competition intensifying, the Ministry is looking for immediate solutions to bridge the current capacity gap without the long lead times of new aircraft purchases.

The presence of State Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat at the meeting underscores the government’s commitment to fleet modernization. If the lease of the 737 series proceeds, it would mark a significant consolidation of Boeing’s footprint in the Bangladesh market, providing the national carrier and local industry with the flexibility needed to navigate the post-2025 aviation landscape.
