PARIS, FRANCE – Fast fashion giant Shein is facing a severe legal crisis in France after the country’s consumer watchdog reported the company to prosecutors for selling what it described as \”sex dolls with a childlike appearance\” on its website.
The revelation by the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) comes just days before Shein is slated to open its first permanent physical store anywhere in the world—in a Parisian department store.
The DGCCRF stated that the online description and categorization of the dolls made it \”difficult to doubt the child pornography nature of the content,\” a classification that triggers immediate and serious legal action in France.
The watchdog has formally reported Shein not only to French prosecutors but also to Arcom, the country’s online and broadcasting regulator, placing the Asian e-commerce behemoth under intense scrutiny.
The scandal hits as Shein attempts to strengthen its foothold in the lucrative European market with its landmark physical retail debut in the French capital.
Shein responded swiftly to the allegations, telling the BBC: \”The products in question were immediately delisted as soon as we became aware of these serious issues.\”
The company confirmed its teams are now \”investigating how these listings circumvented our screening measures\” and vowed to conduct a comprehensive review to identify and remove any similar listings from its vast marketplace, which hosts third-party vendors.
The immediate regulatory intervention in Paris highlights the fierce scrutiny European authorities maintain over online content and product safety, especially as Shein seeks to establish a permanent presence beyond its digital platform.
