Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Pioneer and Hall of Famer, Dies at 81

Jamaica: The world is mourning the loss of Jimmy Cliff, a seminal figure in music and film whose work defined the global rise of reggae. The artist, born James Chambers, passed away at age 81, his wife confirming the cause was a seizure followed by pneumonia.

Cliff’s career, which began with his first hit “Hurricane Hattie” in Jamaica at age 14, quickly gained international momentum after a move to London. By 1970, his fusion of R&B and reggae was dominating charts.

Cliff’s international profile was built on both powerful protest songs and undeniable pop hits:

“Vietnam”: This 1970 single earned high praise from rock legend Bob Dylan, who famously called it the “best protest song ever written.”

UK Chart Success: He achieved a rare feat by having three singles in the UK charts simultaneously in 1970, including “Vietnam,” “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” and his acclaimed cover of Cat Stevens’ “Wild World.”

Cliff’s greatest cultural legacy may be his starring role as Ivan Martin in the 1972 movie “The Harder They Come.” The film told the gritty story of a young man’s journey into the Kingston music industry that ends in crime. Critically, Cliff wrote several songs for the accompanying soundtrack, which became a global phenomenon and served as a vital vehicle for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to North American audiences.

Throughout his career, Cliff maintained an influence that transcended genre, working with a diverse range of artists including the Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Annie Lennox, and Paul Simon. His voice became instantly recognizable to a new generation through his popular cover of “I Can See Clearly Now” on the soundtrack of the 1993 film “Cool Runnings.”

As Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted, Cliff was a “true cultural giant” who successfully carried the heart of his nation to the world stage.
