The Real, Gritty Journey of Jamaica’s 1988 Olympic Pioneers
Dudley Stokes reveals the “hunger and fights” behind the 1988 Jamaican bobsleigh debut that inspired the Disney comedy ‘Cool Runnings’.
DUNDEE : In the span of a single weekend, David Walliams—arguably the UK’s most commercially successful children’s author since Roald Dahl—has seen his publishing and public-speaking empire begin to dismantle.
A Literary Powerhouse at a Standstill Since the publication of The Boy in the Dress in 2008, Walliams has become a cornerstone of the UK book market. With more than 40 titles translated into 55 languages, his absence from the Waterstones Children’s Book Festival marks a significant shift in the literary landscape. His latest title, Santa & Son, was released only two months ago, but the future of his back catalog remains uncertain as HarperCollins terminates their relationship.
The “Festive Schedule” Dilemma Broadcasters are currently navigating the difficult task of managing pre-existing Walliams content. While the BBC aired adaptations of Mr Stink and The Boy in the Dress on CBBC this past Sunday, the corporation has been quick to signal a cooling of relations.
A BBC spokesperson confirmed that while festive schedules (including a Boxing Day appearance on Would I Lie to You?) remain unchanged, there are no new commissions in the pipeline.
The Legal Path Forward The speed of the fallout is particularly notable given that Walliams claims he was never made aware of an investigation. His legal team is currently reviewing the situation, arguing that the author was not given a “right of reply” before being dropped by his primary commercial partners.
As major retailers and publishers distance themselves, the industry now waits to see if the “Walliams brand”—which includes numerous TV films like Gangsta Granny and Billionaire Boy—will be permanently withdrawn from the public eye or remain in circulation as a legacy product.
